Got a new 1 TB Western Digital external hard drive, the My Book Essentials with Smartware. Smartware really $ucks It is painfully slow, hangs, crashes a lot & takes forever to switch tabs looong hour glass no way to verify if the backup is good. This “SmartWare” is Western Digital’s attempt to introduce their backup and security solution onto unsuspecting consumers. You know about it because... Read more

  • Hard Drive Cable Delivery

I needed an HD cable, ordered on 4/22, paid extra for "2-day shipping" assuming I would receive it by 4/24 or 4/25 at the latest; received email stating it was shipped on 4/23 - o.k., delivery by 4/25 -right? Today is 4/28, UPS says it has gone out for delivery but I haven't yet received the cable yet. Customer service by phone made various ridiculous claims that the shipping & delivery was... Read more

I bought a Western Digital Passbook for Mac in January and in April after I had moved all of my important work and used it as a backup it stopped working. Took it to a data recovery center and they said the drive was built faulty. It will cost me upwards of $500 to replace the lost files. I will never buy a drive from this company again. There was no warning or any kind of prior failure on the... Read more

I have a My Book Essentials 3.0 TB external hard drive which stopped working rather suddenly. I searched on Google and, as it was out of warranty, I decided to implement some advice I'd found on youtube.com. I removed the hard disk from the enclosure and after a series of simple tests, determined that the USB-SATA bridge which makes it possible to connect to a computer via USB was faulty. I... Read more

Western Digital -- These are the WORST drives in the industry - and the tech support is completely non-responsive. I lost my entire music collection, all of my photos, and a number of irreplaceable files - you would be better either buying a brick (cheaper and works better) or buying a REAL drive. I am appalled that this company is even in business ... truly the worst product I have ever... Read more

I had a 2006 external hard drive which Dell suggested I buy when I got my 2006 Dell desktop. When that finally died, and I tried to copy the files to my new Dell laptop, the external hard drive failed. I tried contacting Western Digital through their online interface, but they no longer even listed the model of my hard drive, so I had to select a different model just to communicate with them. ... Purchased a 1TB hard drive from Western Digital with the intent on moving some files and photos from my computer to free up space and ultimately speed up the system. With this process completed I continued to use the hard drive as I have any normal Hard Drive in the past, when one day it wasn't there. I checked all over on my computer to find it, checking on another on my house it was described... Read more

Bought 2 of these drives at the same time from Fry's several years ago (yes, both were sealed brand new). Immediately installed one into my computer - no problems - and put the other, unopened, on my bookshelf. Just opened the 2nd one the other week - DEAD. 1 desktop and 2 laptops were unable to access it via an Aluratek HD adapter (which worked/works perfectly fine with 2 other spare WD HDs).... Read more
